Intro

Welcome to my Genjintchi Tamagotchi page! Here I'll tell you all about my experiences with the Genjintchi Tamagotchi, a not-well-known vintage Tamagotchi released in November 1997. Since I recently acquired this Tama as of August 2021, I hope to create some logs and share my opinions on this mysterious model. This page is heavily inspired by the websites Ginjirotchi.ca and Mimitchi.com. Please check them out!

Genjintchi Packaging

The Genjintchi Tamagotchi is a limited edition model of the vintage Tamagotchis. It is only available in the one design: brown shell with red trim, yellow buttons, white bones, and the name "Genjintch" on the top. Released in November 1997, it was sold in theatres alongside the showing of the movie "Peking Man" (see more below).

This Tamagotchi has a Caveman theme, featuring unique characters like a Caveman and CaveWoman, great apes, ancient relics, skeletons, mammoths, and more! The Genjintchi Tamagotchi has some unique features such as the Evolution Meter (discipline/praise) as well as the De-Evolution.

The basic idea is that you are raising life starting from DNA. You evolve your life form by praising it when it calls for attention, and that increases the likelihood that it transforms into a more "evolved" character. If you severely neglect your Genjintchi, it has a chance of De-Evolving into the previous stage while remaining the same age, almost like a reset. For example, if you care for your teenager poorly, it will De-Evolve into a child again while remaining the same age, and you have to wait an additional 72 hours for it to grow back into the teenager.

Why isn't it as popular as other models?

Although this Tamagotchi is unique and interesting compared to other vintage models, there are reasons why it might not be popular or well known. For one, the Peking Movie was only released in Japan and not marketed around the world, limiting its reach. The movie did not perform as well as expected and likely reduced the sales of this model. You could only buy it in the theaters which was unique compared to most other vintage models.

Bandai didn't create a lot of media surrounding the Genjintchi (such as cartoon character designs, booklets, information, etc) which leaves a lot of mystery. The Wiki for this Tama is bare as there isn't much known about it; this is also caused by not many people knowing or playing this model.

Lastly, of the people who do play it, they would likely agree it's somewhat needy compared to other models. I found that the Genjintchi is needy in the baby, child, and teenager stages. I would have to check every hour because it would call for attention for empty hunger and/or happiness, whereas I could wait about twice as long for the P1/P2. It is not as demanding as the Oceangotchi, but I would say it's right in the middle between the P1/P2 and Ocean which might cause frustration for other players.

My Opinion on the Genjintchi

Overall, I'm happy with the Genjintchi. I adore the characters, especially the humanoid ones! The characters are some of my favorite among the vintage models due to their cuteness and uniqueness. I really liked some of the nuances like the egg being a skull instead, and the humanoid characters sleeping next to a campfire. I also enjoyed the concept of the Evolution Meter and the De-Evolution, though I haven't had a Genjintchi devolve yet.

I disliked how needy the Genjintchi could be sometimes. It felt like it was calling for attention at least once an hour and couldn't be left alone for long. It isn't as bad as the Oceangotchi, but it's still needier than I would like. I wish it came in one or two more shells but that's not a big deal.

Overall, I'd say it's about good 3/5 stars. I'd recommend anyone to buy this Tamagotchi as it is distinct from the other vintage models, and relatively cheap (about $30-$60). A good addition to anyone's collection.

Peking Man (1997)

Peking Man (1997) the movie apparently didn't do too well, showing 4.2/10 rating on IMDb. I don't know much history about the movie itself, but it must have been popular or hyped-up for Bandai to create an entire Tamagotchi after it! IMDb gives a brief description about the movie premise:

"In 1929 the fossil of a 500,000 year old man is discovered in China. In 1941 the Japanese army confiscates this find, but during the war the remains disappear. Based on these factual events, this movie takes off with a science fiction story involving a space rocket which places a satellite in orbit containing a secret cargo. The satellite crashes on a remote island and footprints are found in the sand leading away from the crash site. A story of how an ancient primitive cave-dwelling family contends with the scientists who want to study them." - IMDb - Peking Man (1997)
